The aim of all cosmetic surgery
is to make the patient happy about their appearance. Cosmetic surgery
was first developed by surgeons in the 1970s who modified and adapted
surgical methods used for reconstructive surgery after the Second World
War.
The aim was to offer patients
surgical treatments that could improve aspects of their appearance,
that had until then been impossible to change. This included procedures
developed to alter the size and shape of the nose, improve the appearance
of wrinkles and sagging skin, enhance the appearance of the breasts
and various types of fat removal.
The technology and surgical
methods used have developed a great deal in the last 30 years to the
point that most cosmetic surgery is now viewed generally as unexceptional
and for the most part accepted as a societal norm. This has been reflected
by the significantly greater numbers of both patients opting for surgery,
and practices offering it.
One of the most common forms
of cosmetic surgery is called rhinoplasty surgery. Commonly referred
to as a nose job, rhinoplasty surgery aims to alter the shape and size
of the nose by surgical removal of bone and cartilage. In some cases
surgery may involve reconstructing this tissue in other parts of the
nose, all with the aim of making it appear more natural on the face
of the patient.
Other popular treatments include
liposuction, which is the suction-aided removal of fat from the stomach,
thighs and back, and breast augmentation which is possibly the most
well known of all the cosmetic procedures.
As well as these surgical treatments,
there is an array of non-surgical and dental cosmetic procedures available
to improve appearance. For example dermal fillers and skin peels are
non-invasive treatments which make the skin appear firmer and younger.
Similarly, dental restorations such as porcelain veneers and tooth whitening guide
can also have a significant impact on the appearance of the face. Contact
